Bozeman Area

You'll find a stunning array of hiking trails in beautiful Gallatin County. Headwaters State Park, located near Three Forks, is a great place for a moderate hike while taking in beautiful scenery and learning a little Lewis & Clark Expedition history. In the Bozeman vicinity, head up Bridger Canyon to hike Mount Baldy, climb to the ?M? or explore the Fairy Lake area. For a more leisurely pace, head up Hyalite Canyon and stroll up the Palisade Falls trail. There are many great US Forest Trailheads in Gallatin Canyon, including Lava Lake, Moose Creek & Beaver Creek. West Yellowstone's easily accessible Rendezvous Trail System is an excellent choice whether you are training for other outdoor activities or out for a stroll, brisk walk, or a short hike.

"M" Trail

1.6 miles (one way)     Elevation: 4941ft - 5738ft
Begins: "M" Picnic Area – Ends: at "M"
The most popular hike in Bozeman. The trailhead is just off of Bridger Canyon Rd, opposite the Fish Technology Center.


Bear Canyon Trail

4.5 miles (one way)     Elevation: 5991ft -
Begins: 3.5 miles up Bear Canyon Rd – Ends: Bear Lakes Area
Take Bear Canyon Exit (309) off I-90, then L on Bear Canyon Rd, 3.5 miles to trailhead. Offers hiking and mountain biking opportunities in summer months.


Bridger Foothills Trail

24 miles (one way) - steep     Elevation: 4941ft - 9665ft
Begins: "M" Trailhead – Ends: Fairy Lake Campground
The Bridger Foothills National Recreation Trail to be precise, trail runs along Bridger Mountain Ridge. Start at the "M" trailhead, or go to the other end at the Fairy Lake Campground.


Drinking Horse Trail

1.6 miles (one way)     Elevation: 4918ft - 5539ft
Begins: at turn-off by Fish Technology Center – Ends: Drinking Horse Summit
The trailhead is just off of Bridger Canyon Rd right in front of the Fish Technology Center. Please respect private property and stay on trail. No bikes allowed.


Middle Cottonwood Trail

1.2 miles (one way) - steep     Elevation: 5486ft -
Begins: Middle Cottonwood Trailhead – Ends: Bridger Foothills Trail
About 4 miles S on Springhill Rd, then R on Toohey Rd to end, R on Walker Rd, then first L on Saddle Mt Rd, trailhead at end of road.


Mystic Lake Trail

5.5 miles (one way)     Elevation: 5991ft -
Begins: Bear Canyon Trailhead, 3.5 miles up Bear Canyon Rd – Ends: Mystic Lake
Take Bear Canyon Exit (309) off I-90, then L on Bear Canyon Rd, 3.5 miles to trailhead. Offers hiking and mountain biking opportunities in summer months.


Sacagawea Peak Trail

2.18 miles (one way) - steep     Elevation: 7707ft - 9665ft
Begins: just past Fairy Lake Campground – Ends: Sacagawea Summit
The trailhead is just passed the Fairy Lake Campground. Take Bridger Canyon Rd for about 20 miles, then L on Fairy Lake Rd.


South Cottonwood Trail

5.5 miles (one way) - easy     Elevation: 5797ft - 8698ft
Begins: end of South Cottonwood Rd – Ends: Trail 423 (Mt Blackmore)
South on Cottonwood Rd, 2 miles past 19th T, L on Cottonwood Canyon Rd, 4 miles to trailhead at end of road. An easy trail for hiking or biking in summer months.


Sypes Canyon Trail

3 miles (one way) - steep     Elevation: 5276ft -
Begins: end of Sypes Canyon Rd (off Springhill Rd) – Ends: Bridger Foothills Trail (#534)
About 1.5 miles up Springhill Rd, then L on Sypes Canyon Rd, trailhead at end of road. Trail offers hiking and mountain bike opportunities in summer months.


Truman Gulch Trail

2 miles (one way) - moderate     Elevation: 5069ft -
Begins: end of Truman Trail Rd – Ends: Bridger Ridge Trail (#534)
About 5 miles up Springhill Rd, R on Penwell Bridge Rd to end, L on Walker Rd, then R on Forswall Rd, R on Truman Trail Rd, trailhead at end. Hiking and mountain biking in summer months.
